A person was killed when their pickup truck was hit by a train in downtown Flowery Branch early Thursday morning.

The Flowery Branch Police Department confirmed the wreck happened just before 12:15 a.m. at the Lights Ferry Road rail crossing near Atlanta Highway. A preliminary report issued by the Georgia State Patrol said the Nissan Frontier truck was stopped on the tracks when it was hit by the northbound Amtrak train.

The driver of the truck, whose name has not been released as of Thursday afternoon, was ejected and ultimately died. Authorities have not said why the truck was stopped on the tracks.

Flowery Branch police officials said the wreck left the crossing shut down for part of the early morning hours, but it was re-opened within a few hours.
