A long-time business on the downtown Cumming square was heavily damaged by fire Sunday night.
Forsyth County Fire Department Division Chief Jason Shivers said crews were called to Goodson Drug Company on Maple Street around 7:00 p.m.
"When our first units arrived on scene they did, in fact, find a working commercial fire," Shivers said. "Goodson Drugs has been on the square for 65 years now. It's a local, iconic, family-owned pharmacy, and unfortunately, there was an active fire in their building."
Shivers said the fire was brought under control within an hour, but the blaze had already heavily damaged the business. The store was closed at the time and no injuries have been reported.
"The folks driving through town this morning were probably shocked to see the damage done to their beloved pharmacy in downtown Cumming," Shivers said.
The company posted to social media Monday morning in the aftermath of the fire.
"We are hoping to be able to give copies out for your prescriptions by the end of this week. We highly recommend getting new prescriptions from your doctor and have those prescriptions sent to a pharmacy of your choice," the post said. "We appreciate all your thoughts and prayers! Our goal is to be back open as soon as possible and to continue serving our wonderful community."
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Shivers said the roads in and around the square were shut down while firefighters battled the blaze, but all were re-opened late Sunday night.
