Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) retiring CEO has received another prestigious honor for her executive leadership in the health care industry.
The Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals (GACH), representing not-for-profit hospitals and healthcare systems in Georgia has named Carol Burrell of Northeast Georgia Health System their “CEO of the Year” for 2024.
Monty Veazy, President and CEO of GACH says, “Carol Burrell has overseen a dramatic growth of Northeast Georgia Health System, which includes five acute care hospitals in Braselton, Winder, Demorest, and Dahlonega, in addition to their flagship hospital in Gainesville. During her tenure and under her leadership, Northeast Georgia Health System’s Gainesville hospital was designated a Level II Trauma Center in 2013, and last year, it was verified as a Level I trauma center, the highest level of care available.,
Veazy also adds through a press release, "Carol Burrell also led the system to create a Graduate Medical Education program that has grown to include seven residency specialties, two fellowship, and more than 200 physician learners across the healthcare system."
Georgia Trend magazine named Carol Burrell the state's Most Respected Business Leader and was regularly listed among their 100 Most Influential Georgians through ten straight appearances on the list.
A native of Barrow County, Burrell began her career as a medical technologist in the late 1970's, eventuall arriving to NGHS in 1999 with their network of primary care clinics. She was eventually named chief operating officer in 2004 and CEO in 2011.
Burrell announced earlier this year of her plans to retire within a year or so, with the intent to remain as CEO until her successor is named.
