The City of Lawrenceville announced Wednesday the appointment of a new public works director who will take up the role on Jan. 15.
Huston Gillis was selected to be the new director, as he currently serves as the city’s Electric Director, according to officials. Gillis’ experience in that sector will reportedly bridge into public works well, given what city officials deem a “wealth of experience and a proven track record.”
He will also serve on the City Manager’s Executive Management Team.
"We are delighted to welcome Huston Gillis as the new Public Works Director for the City of Lawrenceville,” City Manager Chuck Warbington said. “With his background, qualifications, and commitment to community development, we are confident he will play a pivotal role in contributing to the continued success and growth of our City. His proven leadership and dedication to service make him an invaluable asset, and we look forward to the positive impact he will undoubtedly bring to our Public Works Division.”
Gillis began work with the city in July 2021. Before that, he spent several years working at Jackson EMC, where he held roles in multiple departments such as Lineman and Marketing Services.
Gillis is currently an active member of the Executive Board of Electric Cities of Georgia, a nonprofit organization serving 52 public power members in the Peach State.
“It is an honor to be selected for this new role,” Gillis said. “I look forward to serving our citizens and working with our Public Works department heads to fulfill the ongoing direction of the City Council and leadership. It is an exciting time to be a part of the City of Lawrenceville.”
Gillis has a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from North Georgia College and State University, as well as a Master of Engineering from the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
The Public Works Director position became vacant in Dec. 2023 after Jim Wright moved to Missouri to assume a different Public Works Director position.
