The Gainesville Department of Water Resources has stopped a sewer overflow into Lake Lanier.

A release from the City of Gainesville said the spill was located Tuesday and remedied within two hours after its discovery.

The City of Gainesville responded to a high-level water alarm within the City’s sanitary sewer collection system at around 12:50 p.m., to find a discharge entering Lake Lanier in the Honeysuckle Lane/Harbor Cove area.

The water level subsided and the discharge was stopped by 2:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Gainesville's Department of Water Resources estimates about 1,000 gallons reached Lake Lanier. The area of the lake near the spill was assessed and no dead or stressed aquatic life were found.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division was notified of the spill Tuesday afternoon by the DWR, with signs locally posted.
