A tracking and bomb detection K9 with the Dawson County Sheriff's Office passed away on Friday during a dental procedure.
According to a social media post from the agency, K9 Arthur was a chocolate Labrador Retriever and was six years old.
He began his service with the sheriff's office in February 2018 when he was one year old.
Sergeant Totherow had been Arthur's handler since their partnership began. Totherow recently transitioned to the Hall County Sheriff's Office.
"Their bond was a testament to the special relationship between a K9 and their handler, demonstrating the commitment and trust that develop through years of service together," the social media post said. "Sergeant Totherow shared a deep connection with Arthur, and their teamwork was evident in the successful operations they conducted."
Arthur was in the process of transitioning to a new handler, Deputy Elder.
“K9 Arthur was full of life and energy and loved his job of serving the citizens of Dawson County,” Elder said.
Arthur previously won first place as an explosive detection dog during a regional competition. He underwent 166 live deployments, which ranged from bomb threats, school sweeps, sporting events and courthouse security.
“K9 Arthur was more than just a bomb-sniffing dog; he was a cherished member of our law enforcement family. His loyalty and dedication were exemplary, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside him,” said Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson.
