Basketball: 8-6A opens region with huge matchup in Mt. Airy

Region 8-6A will open its quest to the playoffs on Wednesday, with a full slate of games scheduled.

Union County opened Region 8-2A play on Tuesday. Banks County and East Jackson will get under way on Wednesday in Commerce.

The marquee matchup in 8-6A with have the Habersham Central boys (11-2, 0-0 Region 8-6A) playing host to No. 2-ranked Shiloh (9-3, 0-0 Region 8-6A). The Raiders have won 11 straight games.

On the girls side, Class 6A top-ranked North Forsyth (13-0, 0-0 Region 8-6A) will put its unbeaten streak on the line traveling to Lanier (4-8, 0-0 Region 8-6A). Both Gainesvile teams are off until opening their region schedules on Saturday in Mt. Airy against Habersham Central.

Buford plays host to Carver-Columbus in a non-region showdown at The Buford Arena.
