Members of Gainesville First United Methodist Church gathered Monday morning to honor the lives lost during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, with prayer and a ceremonial ringing of the church bells.
"I think the collective memory of September 11 is still so powerful for people, even people that might not have been born yet," Senior Pastor Jamey Prickett said.
The church bells rang at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m. and 10:03 a.m. These times marked the respective moments at which American Airlines Flight 11 hit the World Trade Center North Tower, United Airlines Flight 175 hit the World Trade Center South Tower, American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon and the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
