OAKWOOD, Ga. — Johnson’s long nightmare is over.
Senior quarterback Demetri Moon scored with just 19 seconds left to lift the Knights to a thrilling come-from-behind 20-19 win over East Hall on Friday at The Dungeon.
Moore’s 15-yard run helped end Johnson’s (1-2) 34-game losing streak going back to 2019. The Knights trailed 13-0 early.
“Just feel extremely happy for the guys and the community,” Johnson coach William Harrell told WDUN Radio during the Hardy Chevrolet Scoreboard Show afterwards. “The guys now see the success they’ve worked so hard for is real. They had been living on faith up until now.”
Moon finished with 194 yards on 28 carries for Johnson. He scored all three of the Knights' touchdowns, including a 45-yarder and a 29-yard run late in the first half to give the Knights a 14-13 halftime lead. However, East Hall scored in the fourth quarter to take a 19-14 lead and it looked like the Vikings (1-1) would escape with the win.
Linus Griffith had a huge game on defense for Johnson with 10 tackles (6 solo) and he picked off two East Hall passes to go with 1 pass deflection as well.
Johnson will travel to East Forsyth next week while East Hall will open its Region 8-4A schedule at home against Chestatee.
