Unemployment rates are lower locally than the previous month, but slightly higher than last year. That statistic comes from State Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson's office.

Thompson says Gainesville recorded an unemployment rate of 2.5 percent in July, down two-tenths of a percent over the month of July.  A year ago, the rate was at 2.4 percent.

The labor force decreased in Gainesville by 293 and ended July with 108,616. That number went up by just over 15-hundred, when compared to July of 2022.

Gainesville finished the month with 105,894 employed residents. That number decreased by 38 over-the-month and rose by 1,337 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Gainesville ended July with 102,800 jobs. That number decreased by 800 from June to July and rose by 1,900 when compared to this time last year.

In July, initial unemployment claims increased by 111 (41%) in Gainesville. When compared to July 2022, claims were down by 10 (-3%).
