An employee with the City of Toccoa was recently arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on theft charges.
According to a press release from the GBI, Jennifer Nichole Johnson, 35, of Toccoa, was charged with theft by deception and exploitation and intimidation of an elder person.
The Toccoa Police Department requested the GBI to conduct the theft investigation on Aug. 8.
Investigators determined a local man took a $2000 cash payment to the Toccoa City Hall to pay for the repair of a water leak. The elderly man spoke limited English. When the man learned that only $200 was credited to his bill, he reported the matter to law enforcement.
The investigation revealed the money was collected by Johnson, a city employee.
Johnson was arrested and booked at the Stephens County Detention Center on Aug. 10 but bonded out that same day.
The case will be provided to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for prosecution once the investigation is complete.
