The Hall County Sheriff's Office is warning the public after a scammer has allegedly attempted to fraudulently rent out booth space to potential victims for the upcoming Clermont Days festival.
According to a social media post from the agency, subjects associated with at least two Facebook accounts have attempted to fraudulently collect money for vendor booth space for the festival.
Officials with the Town of Clermont, who are responsible for organizing the event and renting booth space, reached out to the sheriff's office after learning about the two scam attempts.
Investigators met with the town officials on Aug. 9 to gather information and begin the investigation, which continues. The agency said no one is known to have fallen victim to the current scheme efforts, as of Monday evening.
Hall County Sheriff's Office Intelligence Unit investigators said this type of scam occurs annually, targeting potential vendors for festivals throughout the county.
“Vendors interested in renting booth space at any festival should reach out directly to the organization responsible for the event,” Intelligence Unit Lt. Brett Road said. “In this case, a citizen recognized the solicitation for what it was and reported it to town officials.”
