The Tallulah Falls Police Department recently received a grant that will allow the department to fund resources to prevent fatal traffic accidents in the area.
The $13,500 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety will last from now until September and will pay for mobile computers, printers, and docking stations for their police vehicles.
“The loss of one life on our roads is one too many, and the fact that almost all fatal traffic crashes can be prevented is one reason why we are awarding this grant,” Allen Poole, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety said. “The target of zero traffic deaths in our nation is achievable, and we will continue to help develop and implement educational messages, enforcement campaigns, and other safety initiatives aimed at bringing us one step closer to our goal.”
The department said in a press release that the grant will allow local law enforcement to continue their mission of maintaining safety in the community by ensuring officers are well-equipped to regulate traffic effectively. The resources will also enable the department to respond to calls faster and locate and apprehend violators of the law.
The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety provides grants for several programs that address traffic safety concerns, such as impaired driving, police traffic services, speed control, roadway safety, occupant protection/child passenger safety, pedestrian and bicycle safety, motorcycle safety, traffic records and community traffic safety, to prevent fatal accidents on roadways. Funding for the grants is allocated to each state GOHS annually by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
