Habersham Medical Center officially became Northeast Georgia Medical Center Habersham as of Saturday.

Northeast Georgia Health System began the process to acquire Habersham Medical Center in January 2023.

Recently–named Vice President of Regional Hospitals for NGHS Kevin Matson, who has been with the non-profit since 2000, will be overseeing the day-to-day operations of NGMC Habersham.

“We’re excited to continue caring for the people of this community – many of whom already know and love NGHS,” Matson said. “We’re growing the greater good one step at a time, but this feels like a pretty big leap.”

NGHS said in a press release that patients in the area can still expect their care to remain  consistent, with the same providers and staff patients know as many Habersham specialty practices became Northeast Georgia Physicians Group during the transition:

•Habersham Medical Group Internal Medicine and Geriatrics Rural Healthcare Clinic is now NGPG Internal Medicine
•Habersham OB/GYN is now NGPG OB/GYN.
•Habersham Medical Group Orthopaedics of North Georgia is now NGPG Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine.
•Habersham Medical Group Surgical Services is now NGPG Surgical Associates.

NGHS has also recruited three additional providers during the transition. General surgeon Joseph Rondina, MD; cardiologist Alan Opsahl, MD; and OB/GYN Amy Howard, MD, will now all serve NGMC Habersham.

Matson emphasized NGHS has made another notable change to the medical center.

“NGMC Habersham also now uses Epic – the same electronic medical record as other NGHS hospitals and offices,” Matson said. “This should improve their experience and overall care coordination across all locations.”

In celebration of the transition, North Georgia Habersham will host a free event for the community called Habersham Jam on Saturday, July 15 from 6-9 p.m.  Guests will be able to park at Piedmont University’s Mize Athletic Center located at 428 Laurel Ave., Demorest, GA 30535, with a shuttle service running every 15 minutes. Guests can expect to enjoy live music, food, games, touch-a-truck and more during the event.
