A recent West Hall High School graduate received the Northeast Georgia Health System Partners in Education Healthcare Scholarship.

Oakwood native Christina Collins received the scholarship’s $1000 amount to help offset the cost of pursuing a degree in nursing at the University of North Georgia in the fall.

“I grew up around healthcare, so this means a lot to me,” Collins said, “I really want to help people, more than anything, so this will help make sure I’m able to do that.”

During her time in high school, Collins served as the color guard captain for two years,  a varsity basketball cheerleader, a member of the Senior Beta Club and as a member of HOSA-Future Health Professionals. Outside of school, Collins taught karate as a red belt and participated in Work-based Learning at NGMC a few times each week. According to the medical center,  at NGMC Braselton, she worked in urology, pain management and rehabilitation. At NGMC Gainesville, she worked in the emergency department.

“Christina is deserving of this scholarship because of the hard work she’s put in through high school, and the hard work we know she’ll put in throughout her time in college,” Amy Poole, workforce development coordinator at NGHS, said. “Her passion for excellence and her determination to be empathetic to her future patients and their families is something to be admired. We can’t wait to see all she accomplishes.”

Collins plans to go into pediatrics and care for children inside the hospital or in the emergency department.

Collins receiving the scholarship marks the 14th year it has been awarded. In partnership with the NGHS Auxiliary, as well as Professional Development and Competency at NGHS, the Partners in Education Healthcare Scholarship requires candidates to show a strong interest in pursuing a healthcare career, have a teacher or counselor recommendation, and be in good academic standing at their school.
