A mass elimination of cats in Habersham County is the result of precautionary measures by the local Animal Care and Control office.

A release from Habersham spokesman Rob Moore stated that as of Thursday, 18 total cats – including a cat testing positive for rabies – have been removed and euthanized from a residence just outside of Demorest, by Cannon Bridge Road.

A call made to 9-1-1 over the past weekend alerted Habersham officials of an owner of an "aggressive' cat that was in the area that had bitten and scratched a person in the area.

Animal Control discovered that the cat's owner had a feeding station on their location that hosted a colony of unvaccinated cats from around the area.

Additional cats still are being discovered in various buildings and inside vehicles with closed windows and Habersham Control Director Madi Nix advises residents to comply with officers in situations such as this and produce the animals immediately upon request.
