Governor Brian Kemp has been elected chair of the Southern Regional Education Board.
Kemp will now lead other governors, state legislators and education leaders on the SREB board which covers 16 states throughout the south.
Georgia News Network reports that the nonprofit aims to improve public education, from early childhood to doctoral education.
Kemp says Georgia has prioritized investing in classrooms and ranks among the highest in the region for teacher pay.
Kemp also says his administration has prioritized improving literacy for K-12 students and addressed teacher shortages.
Kemp succeeds West Virgina Governor Jim Justice who served as chair last year.
