The University of North Georgia is now taking applications for its second cohort of the accelerated Bachelor of Science nursing program.

The application period comes after the successful launch of the first cohort in January 2023.

The application deadline is August 15.

The University in partnership with Northeast Georgia Health System launched the track in response to the recent nursing shortage in North Georgia.

The second cohort begins in January 2024.

"We know there is an enormous nursing shortage that is putting a burden on the health care system,” said assistant professor of nursing and ABSN coordinator, Dr. Sharon Jones. “We need help, and these students in the ABSN track can provide that assistance.”

"I really wanted to pursue something that gave me the opportunity to have a tangible impact with people face to face," said ABSN student Ronny Wilson. “You're always on your feet. You're always moving. I didn't want to sit behind a desk anymore."

NGHS expressed appreciation for the partnership claiming that the accelerated BSN program gives students the opportunity to begin work as a nurse quicker than a traditional BSN program.

ABSN faculty members make sure that students feel a connection with fellow students, traditional BSN students, and faculty members.

"Nursing is a community, and we depend on each other," Jones said. "It's important they have the socialization with traditional students, as well."

Students with a bachelor's or master's degree can join the program and complete their degree in 15 months.

UNG claims their nursing program has a 98% success rate on the National Council Licensure Examination test for nurses to be certified and a 100% job placement rate.

A partnership between Northeast Georgia Health System and UNG is addressing the nursing shortage through an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Abigail Gibson and Ronny Wilson are students in the first ABSN cohort.
