The Tax Commissioner of Lumpkin County was arrested Tuesday on charges related to the illegal possession of controlled substances.

According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Michael David Young, 57, was charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, use of a communication facility to commit a felony and conspiracy to purchase controlled substances.

The Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office initially requested the assistance of the GBI to investigate allegations that Young was "utilizing the influence of his office to obtain illegal drugs."

The GBI said they were not able to establish the use of the office for illegal drugs, but they were able to establish Young allegedly illegally obtained and used prescription pills.

Young turned himself into the Lumpkin County Detention Center.

The case will be given to the Enotah Judicial Circuit for prosecution following the investigation.
