Just as the school year comes to a close for Hall County Schools, the district will be piloting a new program that allows rising sophomores, juniors and seniors to take home their school issued Chromebooks over summer break.

In years past, when the district issued Chromebooks to students to complete classwork during the school year, students would be expected to return them about a week before the end of the spring semester. However, Stan Lewis, Director of Communications and Athletics for Hall County Schools said that allowing students to keep the laptops over break has a few practical benefits.

“We realized that students probably are going to be using those Chromebooks right up until the last day of school,” he said. “And it would also be kind of nice if we had Chromebooks in the hands of those students on the first day of school. And in between, of course, we've got a lot of students that are trying to get caught up on credits with our Edgenuity courses. Chromebooks are vital for that to take place.”

Parents may choose to opt their student out of the program, but the Chromebooks will still be inspected before and after the break and students will be responsible for any loss or damages to the devices.

“We just want to give students the resources they need to be successful,’ Lewis said.” Be it the first day of school, the last day of school, and during the summer.”
