A Buford woman is dead after authorities said she was impaled by a pipe while driving on I-75 in Northwest Georgia Tuesday.

A release from the Georgia State Patrol said the incident happened just before 2:00 p.m. on the southbound side of the interstate just south of Dalton. Troopers say the woman was driving in the middle lane when a metal pipe broke through her front windshield and impaled her in the neck.

The woman, later identified as Lynn Ann Fleming of Buford, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is still under investigation by the state patrol. Officials did not indicate in Wednesday's release where the pipe came from.

The southbound side of I-75 was shut down for about an hour while authorities worked the scene.
