The sheriff of Towns County is warning residents about scammers who have been posing as sheriff's office investigators over the phone.
The sheriff's office released a statement on social media Monday saying they've received calls from citizens who said they were contacted by someone claiming to be an investigator and wanting to talk about an "urgent criminal matter." The statement said those calls are scammers.
“If you have any questions to the legitimacy of a caller claiming to be a Towns County Sheriff’s Deputy or Investigator, please reach out to the Towns County Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Ken Henderson said.
In the statement, sheriff's office officials said if a caller asks you to pay a fine or fee or purchase a pre-paid debit card, it is a scam and should be reported to authorities. Henderson said anyone concerned about a possible scam should call 706-896-4444.
