Northeast Georgia Health System broke ground Wednesday, March 8, at the site that will house its new Medical Plaza 2 off GA-400 in Dawsonville.

“We’ve been looking forward to this expansion for quite some time,” Daniel Tuffy, the president and chief administrator for Northeast Georgia Physicians Group, said Thursday in a release. “This expanded hub for care is the next step in our preparation for the opening of the new NGMC Lumpkin hospital on GA-400.”

According to officials, the new expansion will be built next to NGHS Medical Plaza 400 and will include a three-story, 35,800 sq ft. building that will be visible from GA-400.

“Since we opened Medical Plaza 400 in 2013, we’ve seen the growing need for care here, so we’re excited to be able to provide that for this community and continue to keep them close to home,” Tuffy said.

The Medical Plaza 2 expansion will cost $20.9 million and will include a new, larger NGPG urgent care center that will be open seven days a week from 8am-8pm; cardiology services provided by Georgia Heart Institute; and NGPG specialty services including obstetrics and gynecology, sports medicine, orthopedic surgery and urology.

According to officials, Medical Plaza 400 will be renamed Medical Plaza 1 as the new Medical Plaza 2 is being built.

Medical Plaza 2 is expected to open in spring 2024 and will accommodate 100,000 patient visits a year.
