The Gainesville Board of Education approved $3.2 million at their meeting Tuesday afternoon for the purchase of new Chromebooks for all students in the district.
The purchase includes 7000 traditional Chromebooks, as well as 1800 2-in-1 devices, according to Jill Hobson, chief technology officer with the district.
Funding for the purchase comes from federal ESSER funds, which Superintendent Jeremy Williams said is set to expire after the next school year.
The current student Chromebooks in the district will go through a recycler following the acquisition of the new devices.
"This is a company that takes the Chromebooks ... they provide us with a Department of Defense level certificate of data destruction," Hobson said. "They guarantee us that the data is non-recoverable, even among the smartest and most gifted people who might be trying to find that data."
The district will keep some of the old Chromebooks as backup devices.
