An Elberton woman died in a two-vehicle wreck Friday morning on GA 17 near Adamanda Road in Elbert County.
At approximately 7:11 a.m. a Georgia State Patrol trooper from Post 52 out of Hartwell was dispatched to a wreck involving reports of a fatal injury. Officials said that preliminary investigations indicated a red 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 was traveling southbound on GA 17 when it failed to maintain the lane and crossed into northbound traffic.
A white 2019 Isuzu NPR HD was traveling northbound when the Dodge veered into the lane and the Isuzu struck the passenger side of the Dodge. After the impact, both vehicles reportedly rotated clockwise and came to rest off the west shoulder of the roadway.
The driver of the Dodge, Monica Davis Hagood, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Isuzu, Michael Antonio Merriett, 42, was transported in critical condition to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center by Elbert County EMS.
According to a release, the tread of the rear tires of the Dodge were below the tread wear bars. Officials said when paired with the inclement weather seen Friday morning, they suspect both factors may have played a role in the crash.
