Jackson County school officials have announced the name of a new elementary school that will be opening in the county in 2024.
The Jackson County Board of Education unanimously voted Monday night to name the new school "Heroes Elementary School." A release from school officials said the name is meant to recognize heroes in both the Jackson County community and the country who rise to challenges both every day and during the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
The school will have themes recognizing U.S. military members, police officers, firefighters, medical personnel and teachers. Jackson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Philip Brown said he's excited about the name.
“I appreciate the Board’s visionary leadership in helping our young people see that community members around them are heroes on a daily basis,” Brown said.
Construction on Heroes Elementary School is set to begin in the spring and open in fall of 2024. It will be located at the intersection of Georgia 332 and Skelton Road near the recently built campus of Jackson County High School and the new Legacy Knoll Middle School, which is set to open in the fall.
Heroes will be the seventh elementary school in the Jackson County School System.
