Residents in Hall and Forsyth counties have the option to recycle their Christmas trees again this year through a program that turns the festive pines into free mulch.

“Bring One for the Chipper” is an initiative allowing residents to discard their trees for free through the recycling process, according to officials with both Hall and Forsyth counties. Trees are chipped into mulch, which is given out free of charge.

Hall County’s 12 compactor sites and the Hall County Recycling Center on Chesnut Street will be accepting trees through Jan. 8. The resulting mulch will be available at the Hall County Landfill Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“This initiative not only serves as a way to turn discarded Christmas trees into a great resource for county residents, but it also keeps the trees from taking up valuable space at the Hall County Landfill,” Hall County Resource Recovery Supervisor Bobby Purdum said.

Forsyth County is also participating via their “Keep Forsyth County Beautiful” program. Their side of the program will run from Dec. 26 through Jan. 27.

“Forsyth County has recycled well over a hundred thousand Christmas trees since the county began participating in the ‘Bring One for the Chipper’ program in 1994,” Environmental Program Manager Tammy Wright said. “All of the Christmas trees brought to us for recycling have either been placed in the lake as fish habitat or chipped into reusable mulch. We look forward to keeping trees out of landfills every year.”

Residents in Forsyth County can drop their trees off at Home Depot locations along Market Place Boulevard or Peachtree Parkway on Jan. 6 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Alternatively, the following locations are available to Forsyth residents:

The mulch generated from chipping trees in Forsyth will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at Coal Mountain Park, 3560 Settingdown Road.

Trees brought for recycling should be undecorated when dropped off and no artificial trees will be accepted.

Trucks are filled with chipped and mulched Christmas trees as part of the Bring One for the Chipper event.
