A kangaroo's escape attempt was short-lived Friday afternoon in Gilmer County after authorities say he was caught before hopping too far from civilization.

In a social media post at about 1 p.m., the Gilmer County Sheriff's Office said the 3-foot-tall "tame" red kangaroo named Stevie was quickly located after he went missing near the Blackberry Mountain area.

The owner is from out of state, according to the post. It's unclear if Stevie or his owner are from "Down Under," also referred to as the countries of Australia or New Zealand.

The sheriff's office initially asked the public to spring into action and call dispatch if they were able to locate Stevie.

"No folks, this is not a joke!" the social media post reads.

Authorities have not released any information about the motive behind Stevie's escape, likely to avoid jumping to conclusions.
