Dry conditions across Northeast Georgia didn’t help when a forest fire broke out Wednesday morning outside Demorest.

Habersham County Emergency Services responded at approximately 9:19 a.m. after E-911 services received a call reporting a fire in the woods next to a large, dry field on Smith Loop Road, spokesman Rob Moore said.

The fire was located between Ed Trench Road and Can-Trail Drive.

Multiple agencies responded to the call, including Habersham County EMS, Demorest Fire Department, Cornelia Fire Department and the Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Station.

Approximately a 10,000-square-foot area was burning when units arrived, with flames threatening one nearby structure and vehicle.

Responders were able to gain access to the rear of the fire, while other crew members used rakes and flanked the other sides of the blaze, Moore said.

The fire was quickly brought under control and contained, and there were no injuries reported and no damage to vehicles or buildings.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined but it has been deemed as accidental.

“Habersham County fire officials are keeping an eye on the current conditions as well as the forecast in the near future,” Operations Chief Jason Davey said. “Emergency Services has the ability to control permits that the county issues and officials have been and will continue to be in contact with Georgia Forestry as we continue to monitor these conditions.”

There is currently no burn ban, according to Habersham County officials.
