Hall County State Court Judge John Breakfield announced on Wednesday that he plans to run for Superior Court Judge of the Northeastern Judicial Circuit in 2024.
Judge Breakfield has served as Hall County State Court Judge since being elected in 2016. He is running for the seat currently held by Kathlene Gosselin, who announced she will retire at the end of her term in 2024. Breakfield will see opposition from current Magistrate Court Judge Michele Hall.
Hall County Magistrate Court Judge Brian Heck also previously announced he would run for Gosselin's Superior Court seat. However, Heck announced in a press release Thursday morning he would instead run for Breakfield's State Court seat.
“I am honored to have served the People of Hall County for two elected terms. During my tenure, we have delivered on our promises of upholding the law, being a wise steward of taxpayer money, and fairly and efficiently administering justice. I hope to continue to do the same for The People of Hall and Dawson Counties,” Breakfield said.
Along with serving on the State Court Bench, Judge Breakfield serves on the Executive Committee of the Council of State Court Judges Legislative Issues Committee and is chair of the local district.
“I know that each case is the most important case to everyone involved. I strongly believe that as a judge, I should listen to each side, follow the law, and treat everyone fairly and with respect. Rulings should be made thoughtfully, deliberatively, and timely. Justice delayed is justice denied for all involved,” Breakfield said.
Prior to serving on the State Court Bench, Judge Breakfield served as the part-time prosecutor for Gainesville Municipal Court, as well as a part-time adjunct professor for The University of North Georgia’s paralegal program.
“I care about the People of Hall and Dawson Counties, and I understand that, if elected, I work for them. In the courthouse and in the community, my goal is to make The People proud to have me as their Judge. To The People of Hall and Dawson Counties, I hope to earn your trust and I am asking for your vote on May 21, 2024,” Breakfield said.
