A resident living near Cornelia was managing a burn pile fire Monday morning when it spread into the nearby woods, prompting a call to Habersham County Emergency Services.

Personnel responded to the scene Monday morning at approximately 11:57 a.m., located just off Pea Ridge Road outside Cornelia, according to spokesman Rob Moore.

“Habersham County Emergency Services received a call for a large brush fire that had gotten out of control, possibly into the wood line,” HCES Battalion Chief Michael Alexander said. “Our Station 12 was the first on scene and advised that it had gotten into the woods.”

Upon arrival, crews located eight vehicles a short distance from the fire and then requested additional aid from the Cornelia Fire Department and the Georgia Forestry Commission.

“We do have it under control with the assistance from Cornelia Fire Department and also Georgia Forestry,” Alexander said. “The homeowner did have a burn permit and he appeared to be abiding by all the rules.”

Crews turned the scene over to the Georgia Forestry Commission fully at 2:50 p.m.
