Over 50 supporters agreed to become temporary “pen mates,” spending time locked inside kennels with adoptable pets in order to raise money through online fundraising.
In total, the lock-in event raised approximately $64,070 for the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia. The purpose of the event is said to help strengthen the shelter’s lineup of services for homeless pets while also addressing Georgia’s ranking as the fifth-highest rate of animal euthanasia in the country, according to HSNEGA spokesperson Kelsey Chastain.
During the last few weeks, over 50 supporters have spent varying amounts of time bonding with animals on their turf, locked in cages to generate money for online fundraisers.
“The event gives you a chance to see the world from the animals’ point of view,” Shelter Manager Kathleen Garrand said. “The kennel is a lonely place, and spending the day with a rescue animal puts it all into perspective. However, it is also an uplifting experience because we have the chance to help that rescue pet’s dream come true: to find love and their forever home.”
Adoption Angel Lock-In is one of the shelter’s most successful events, as all proceeds benefit the organization’s rescue and adoption programs.
“It is critical that Georgia address the health of animals in our state due to the fact that many animals are struggling to stay alive every day,” Shelter President and CEO Allison Mayfield said. “HSNEGA considers it a privilege to help lead this effort and looks forward to sharing more life-saving initiatives in the coming months.”
The shelter has been in operation since 1913, serving the community as a nonprofit organization with the mission of helping animals find homes.
