The man killed in an early-morning officer-involved shooting in Lawrenceville has been identified by Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials.
John Michael Cicalo, Jr., 33, of Dacula was shot and killed Tuesday morning after he reportedly attempted to steal a police cruiser during a traffic stop.
Update published Tuesday at 9:54 a.m.:
A man was killed early Tuesday morning in Lawrenceville in an officer-involved shooting.
According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the incident happened at about 3 a.m. on Highway 120 near Pike Park Drive.
Lawrenceville Police Department officers were conducting a traffic stop when the driver of a black Kia Sorento sped past them. The driver then made a U-turn and drove back toward the officers.
The driver abandoned his vehicle and attempted to steal the officer's police cruiser. The officers gave the man verbal commands to comply, but ultimately shot and killed the driver.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The name of the driver was not released as authorities attempted to notify his next of kin.
The GBI investigation is active and ongoing. The case file will be given to the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office for review once the investigation is complete.
This is the 74th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate so far in 2023.

Police in Lawrenceville say an officer-involved shooting has forced Tuesday morning's blockage of West Pike Street near Old Norcross Road.
Lawrenceville PD Captain Salvador Ortega says the GBI is handling the investigation, while noting that none of Lawrenceville's police officers were hurt during the incident.
No word as of early Tuesday on the reason for the shooting.
As of last report, West Pike Street remained blocked between Old Norcross Road and Langley Drive during the Tuesday morning commute.
