GRAY, Ga. — Jefferson knocked off defending Class 5A state champion Cass, 37-33, in a thrilling Duals Championship finals on Saturday at Jones County High School.
It is the second title in three seasons for the Dragons, who collected their 19th overall Duals title since its inception in 2002. It also was the highest classification title won by the Dragons program.
In other Duals Championship action around the state, North Forsyth lost to South Effingham, 36-28, in the Class 6A finals held at Gainesville High School.
The Raiders beat Lee County 40-28 in the opening round and then nipped Woodward Academy, 32-31, in the semifinals to advance. Both teams were looking for their first-ever Duals title.
Buford also finished second in Class 7A, falling to now-seven-time defending Duals Champion Camden County, 39-22, at The Buford Arena. The Wolves rolled into the finals with big wins over Brookwood and West Forsyth. They held a 22-15 lead with five matches left but could not hold on.
In Class 4A, Chestatee had its best-ever finish, taking third after beating fellow Area 8-4A foe North Oconee , 42-30, in the third-place match. The War Eagles opened with a tough 42-21 win over Sonoraville but lost 46-27 to eventual state champion Central-Carroll in the semifinals.
Central-Carroll went on to upset No. 1-seed and host Lovett, 34-33 in the finals. It was the first-ever Duals state title for Central-Carroll.
