State officials have confirmed that one Stephens County woman died in a house fire on Jan. 6.

Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King announced Wednesday that one woman, 87, was found in the residence on Oak Valley Lane in Toccoa.

A passing driver reported a possible woods fire around 11:55 a.m., and a second caller reported a residential structure fire on the same road.

“When fire officials arrived on scene, they found the residential structure fully engulfed in flames,” Commissioner King said in a press release. “Upon extinguishment, a victim, identified as an 87-year-old woman living by herself, was found in the living room of the residence. The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time.”

The Office Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire is assisting the Stephens County Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.
