Two suspects from Decatur were arrested over the weekend after they fled from an attempted traffic stop in a stolen vehicle on Atlanta Highway south of Gainesville.
Nyquavious Kalmonte Jordan and Joe Jean Roquemore, both 18, were traveling northbound on Atlanta Highway at about 11:50 p.m. Saturday in a Hyundai Elantra. According to a press release, they were driving about 20 mph over the speed limit.
A Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputy noticed the driver of the vehicle failed to stay in his lane and failed to dim his headlights for oncoming vehicles. The deputy attempted a traffic stop as the driver turned onto Tumbling Creek Road.
The driver accelerated and turned off the lights to the vehicle in an alleged attempt to elude the patrol vehicle. The driver then ran a red light at Old Oakwood Road and entered Millside Parkway where he failed to negotiate a curve. He struck a raised median, crossed the eastbound traffic lanes, ran off the road and struck some trees.
Both suspects then left the vehicle and ran into nearby woods. A K9 team and additional HCSO units were called to help with the pursuit. Oakwood Police Department and Gainesville Police Department units also assisted with the search.
After about two hours into the search, Jordan and Roquemore were found in a neighborhood near Apache Circle.
An investigation found the Hyundai the teens were driving was stolen from a location in DeKalb County.
Jordan, the driver of the vehicle, was charged with a long list of traffic offenses, including speeding, fleeing-attempting to elude a police officer and DUI drugs less safe. Jordan was also charged with obstruction-resisting arrest and theft by receiving stolen property.
Roquemore, the passenger in the vehicle, was charged with obstruction-resisting arrest and possession of a dangerous drug.
