Kinetic announced plans Thursday to offer fiber internet service to more than 14,000 homes and businesses in Winder.

The project will provide broadband fiber internet to half of the greater Winder community by the end of 2022. Kinetic also announced plans to further expand its fiber service in the Winder area in 2023. Kinetic already provides fiber internet to about 9,000 customers in Winder.

"We're gratified to announce this project from Kinetic," Barrow County Chamber President Tommy Jennings said at the event Thursday at Winder's Innovation Amphitheater. "High-speed optical cable is the most sophisticated technology there is for internet service. Having it here will put Winder and Barrow County on an equal footing with the rest of metro Atlanta as we continue to grow our economy and create good jobs."

The project is part of a $2 billion multiyear capital investment strategy to expand gigabit internet service across Kinetic's 18-state footprint.

Kinetic's gigabit broadband allows users to download 1,000 megabits per second, about 100 times faster than the average internet speed in the U.S. Kinetic's gigabit broadband runs on a fiber-optic line capable of much higher speeds than the traditional copper lines of most DSL and cable connections.

State Rep. Terry England, R-Auburn, said Kinetic was showing a strong commitment to the Winder and Barrow County community with the announcement.

"No matter if it's our children's education or the needs of local businesses, broadband is a necessity in 2022," England said. "Windstream is making this a reality in Winder and Barrow County with an investment that will provide gig-speed fiber connections to more than 14,000 households and businesses in our community. I appreciate its partnership and the great things to come."

Kinetic state operations president Michael Foor said they were thrilled to bring this service to the people of Winder and Barrow County.

"The energy and momentum we have in the marketplace is unmistakable, and we are proud we're able to bring out ultrafast fiber connectivity to more people every single day. When we say, 'High Speed for Here,' we mean Winder and Barrow County."

Customers can visit the Kinetic Connection Center at 149 Pottery Factory Drive in Commerce or call 706-335-0311 to find out if they are eligible for a speed upgrade. More information is available at GoKinetic.com.
