A relaunched advisory council for Gwinnett County Public School students is returning this year to allow middle and high schoolers to share their feedback about issues in the district.
Gwinnett County Public Schools Superintendent Calvin Watts created this council last year to improve the student experience and improve leadership opportunities. Watts encouraged students who served on the council last year to reapply.
“The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council is one of the ways I can meet and learn from our students across the county,” Watts said in a news release. “Through this Council, our students can voice their ideas, share suggestions for improving our schools and our district, act as thought partners as they connect with fellow students, and build their leadership capacity alongside students with whom they may not otherwise have collaborated.”
According to the news release, applying students should be concerned about their peers’ needs and must have a desire to ensure Gwinnett County Public Schools is focused on improvements for all students.
Dr. Watts also stressed the importance of expressing honest and constructive, yet respectful opinions. Applicants should be able to work collaboratively and have a willingness to suggest solutions that will improve a wide range of topics that GCPS face.
Students can apply to serve on the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council on the GCPS student portal. The application deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 31. Students will find out on Sept. 9 if they have been selected.
The Student Advisory Council will meet four times a year. The dates, times and meeting locations can be found here.
