Work is nearing completion on phase one of a project to widen Spout Springs Road in Flowery Branch, and that includes some changes at I-985.
Elizabeth Johnson, district one communications officer with the Georgia Department of Transportation, said phase one of the project is expected to be complete by October 31. Phase one focuses on the area from Hog Mountain Road to Union Circle while phase two involves the widening of the roadway from Union Circle to south of Thompson Mill Road. GDOT has not started work on the second phase.
"The biggest problem that they had is the roadway had to be built up in order to meet the regular roadway that was there, which took quite a bit of time," Johnson said. "There was a section of roadway that was closed for a two-week period of time."
Johnson said part of the project includes a new through lane and right turn lane at the entrance ramp onto I-985 northbound from Spout Springs Road.
"When it rains here, it rains hard and fast, so there's flooding," Johnson said. "They removed the sidewalks to install a storm drain, that's critical ... there will be a new sidewalk installed once the job is completed."
While phase one of the project and the changes at I-985 are expected to be finished by the end of October, Johnson said that could change pending weather issues or changes in cost.
