Flooding temporarily closes Pearl Nix Parkway at Dorsey Street

Monday afternoon’s thunderstorms resulted in some street flooding in Gainesville.

“We did have Pearl Nix Parkway closed due to flooding across all four lanes,” said Gainesville Fire Department Division Chief Keith Smith. “There were two vehicles that were stuck in the flooded area. One vehicle was pushed out. The second had to be towed. The roadway was closed for about 30 minutes to allow the water to recede.”

There also was flooding on Industrial Drive at Main Street beside the train station in Gainesville.

A small ice cream store near the intersection of Pearl Nix Parkway and Dorsey Street sustained some interior flood damage, Smith said. Employees were working to remove water from the business.

“There was just too much water, at one time, for the drains to handle,” Smith said. “Once the water level receded, the roadway was reopened.”

The back of a house at the end of Erskin Drive, adjacent to the Pearl Nix Parkway intersection at Dorsey Street, also flooded, though Smith said firefighters were not called to that location.

Smith said flooding in other areas was quickly resolved as the drains in those areas began to recover and allowed the water to flow downstream.

On Interstate 985, a vehicle hydroplaned due to the water on the road, coming to rest in the median.

No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
