NL East battle heads to New York for 4-game series

NEW YORK — The second-place Atlanta Braves head to New York to battle the NL East-leading Mets on Thursday to open a huge four-game series at Citi Field.

New York (66-38) leads the Braves (63-42) by 3 1/2 games coming into the series. The Braves could jump into first place for the first time this season with a sweep.

The Braves will send NL wins leader Kyle Wright (13-4, 2.93 ERA) to the mound to open the series while the Mets will counter with Carlos Carrasco (11-4, 3.79 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

BOTTOM LINE: The Mets will try to keep a three-game home win streak going while the Braves are 26-20 on the road this season. New York has a 31-17 record at Citi Field.

Thursday’s game is the eighth time these teams square off this season. The Mets hold a 4-3 advantage in the season series to this point.

TOP PERFORMERS: Jeff McNeil is 10th on the Mets with a .302 batting average, and has 24 doubles, a triple, five home runs, 24 walks and 39 RBI. Francisco Lindor is 16-for-38 with three home runs and eight RBI over the past 10 games.

Dansby Swanson has 21 doubles, a triple and 15 home runs for the Braves. Matt Olson is 6-for-35 with a double and three home runs over the last 10 games.
