ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves have acquired RHP Jake Odorizzi from the Houston Astros in exchange for LHP Will Smith. Odorizzi will wear No. 12.
Odorizzi, 32, went 4-3 with a 3.75 ERA (25 ER/60.0 IP) in 12 games, all starts, for the Astros this season. He missed 42 games with a lower left leg injury from May 17-July 4, but since returning to the Houston rotation is 1-1 with a 4.45 ERA (14 ER/28.1 IP) in five starts. In his latest outing on July 31 vs. Seattle, Odorizzi allowed two hits over 7.0 shutout innings.
Odorizzi was a 2019 All-Star with Minnesota, and the 6-foot-2, 190-pound native of Breese, Ill. won a career-best 15 games that season. He joined Houston in 2021 and appeared in Game 1 of the World Series against Atlanta last season, striking out five over 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers 32nd overall in 2008 out of Highland High School in Highland, Ill., Odorizzi made his major league debut in 2012 with Kanas City. He moved to Tampa Bay the following season before joining Minnesota in 2018. Over 231 career games, 227 starts, Odorizzi is 72-66 with a 3.94 ERA (528 ER/1,207.0).
Smith, 33, compiled a 4.38 ERA (18 ER/37.0 IP) in 41 games out of the bullpen for Atlanta this season.
