Bonita Jacobs, the president of the University of North Georgia, announced Monday her plans to retire at the end of the coming academic year in June 2023.
In an email sent to UNG students, faculty and staff, Jacobs said she had notified Chancellor Sonny Perdue and the University System of Georgia Board of Regents of her intent to retire. Jacobs has served as president of the university since 2011.
"UNG is a wonderful institution with a long history of educating outstanding professional, civic and military leaders for our state and nation, and our momentum points to a bright future," Jacobs said in the email. "I am announcing my plans now to ensure the Board of Regents has ample time to select UNG’s next president and to provide for a stable transition over this next year as we celebrate North Georgia’s sesquicentennial—our 150th anniversary.
Jacobs said serving as president has been one of the most rewarding experiences of her career.
"Integral to our success are the dedicated faculty and staff who have demonstrated unwavering commitment to student success," Jacobs said. "Together, our accomplishments have been remarkable, and I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this amazing university and work alongside them on behalf of our students and graduates."
Jacobs said she looks forward to working with university leaders over the next year to welcome the next president to the university.
