Three Habersham municipalities will have Special Elections to fill vacant council seats on Nov. 8.
Residents of Alto, Clarkesville, and Demorest interested in running for an open council seat in their city can qualify this week (Aug. 1-5) at the Habersham County Elections and Registration Office, 130 Jacob’s Way, Suite 101, Clarkesville.
Alto
In Alto, the town will fill Council Post 1, formerly held by Turner Griffith, and Council Post 5, formerly held by P.J. Huggins.
Qualifying fee is $35, and those seeking office must have lived inside the town for 12 months prior to the date of the election.
The terms are for just more than three years, beginning about Nov. 15 and running through Dec. 31, 2025.
Clarkesville
In Clarkesville, the city will fill Council Post 2, formerly held by Roxie Barron, who relocated out of state.
Qualifying fee is $18, and qualifiers must have lived inside the city for 12 months prior to the date of the election.
The seat is for the remainder of Barron’s term, beginning about Dec. 5 and running through Dec. 31, 2023.
Demorest
In Demorest, the city will fill the city council seat formerly held by Nathan Wile Davis.
Qualifying fee is $100, and qualifiers must have lived inside the city for 12 months prior to the date of the election.
The seat is for the remainder of Davis’ term, from about Nov. 15 through Dec. 31, 2023.
Habersham County Elections and Registration Office is located at 130 Jacob’s Way, Suite 101, Clarkesville.
Qualifying is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday.
