Body of Murphy, N.C., man recovered after apparent drowning on Lake Nottely

The Union County Sheriff’s Office says the body of 38-year-old Michael Jason Kolar of Murphy, N.C., was recovered from Lake Nottely shortly before 2 p.m. Friday.

Kolar went snorkeling near the boat ramp at Nottely Dam in Blairsville the evening of Wednesday, July 20.

Union County Sheriff’s Capt. Daren Osborn said the body surfaced close to the shoreline in some 15 to 20 feet of water.

The body will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s State Crime Lab in Decatur for an autopsy.

Alcohol was involved, Osborn said.

Osborn thanked the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, Union County Fire/Rescue/Emergency Management Agency, Georgia Emergency Management Agency, Forsyth County Fire Department Dive Team for assisting Union County Sheriff’s Office with the lengthy operation.
