Gwinnett County Fire Services put out a house fire on Wednesday in Snellville after the home was struck by lightning.

Crews arrived at the two-story, split-level home on the 4300 block of Amy Road SW around 4:46 p.m.. They found heavy fire coming from the garage on the basement level.

Gwinnett County Fire Services spokeswoman Stephanie Brown said it took firefighters about 10 minutes to control the flames.

The homeowner was not inside the home, but three of her cats were missing.

“They did a search for the felines,” Brown said. “Two of them were never found but one was found deceased.”

No injuries were reported, but the home experienced extensive damage to its garage and several rooms. Firefighters also identified a compromised floor system near the front left corner of the house

Brown said the homeowner had working smoke detectors, and that she heard a loud “pop” from what was later determined as a lightning strike.

The homeowner will stay with family while repairs are made to her home.
It took Gwinnett County Fire Services about 10 minutes to get the fire under control.
