Two-a-Days: Interest is at an all-high for the Indians, who still have plenty of on-field questions

There are just 20 days remaining until the kickoff of the 2022 high school football season. But make no mistake, preparations for the upcoming campaign got underway months ago. And teams throughout northeast Georgia already are in full countdown mode.

With that in mind, we spent the last couple of weeks catching up with programs around our area to get a feel for how spring practice went, how the summer is going, and what coaches believe the fall will look like. Our "Two-a-Days" series honors those old-school grinding sessions that lead us out of summer and into fall, asking each area coach two key questions about the state of their respective programs.

Over the next two weeks, AccessWDUN's Friday Game Night will get you prepped for the start of gridiron action with responses from coaches throughout northeast Georgia. (Teams run in alphabetical order)...

The trend is definitely up for the Indians, who are having record numbers show up to participate. Coach Jason Roquemore said that has been the biggest change in now his third season in Hiawassee. But they have plenty of on-field questions to answer, most specifically in the secondary, which will be young and inexperienced.

We caught up with Coach Roquemore to get his take on the excitement for the program and how the on-field changes are progressing.

QUESTION: Coach, the interest in the program has never been higher. What has the mood been like so far for the players through the summer with the ability to conduct full-on 11-on-11 drills with some depth?

A:  Our culture has continued to grow and take shape this summer. We had a great offseason with our Leadership Council this spring, and our players have done a great job of embracing the challenge of being a "No Excuses" type of program. I am so proud of our young men and how they have impacted not only our program but our school and community. They have done a phenomenal job and deserve all the credit.

Q: Y’all will be young in the defensive secondary. What progress has that unit made during the spring and summer?

A: As of right now, we are playing with some young kids in the back half. Some of those kids don't have a lot of grass time under the lights on Friday night. However, I have been very pleased with the progression we have made this summer through 7-on-7 and padded camp opportunities. For us, it is important to continue to find ways to build their confidence as we transition into the fall.
