Georgia drivers are finding some relief at the pump this week as gas prices drop. Since last week, gas dropped 7 cents to make the current average $4.40 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. That is 27 cents more than last month and $1.49 more than this time last year.
In our area, Dawson and Lumpkin Counties continue to have the highest gas prices in the state. Dawson County has an average of $4.48 per gallon and Lumpkin County is at $4.46 on Monday morning. Meanwhile, Habersham and White counties have the lowest gas prices in northeast Georgia at $4.33.
According to the AAA Weekly Gas Report, the drop in price can be attributed to the decline in crude oil. “Georgia pump price average has managed to decrease across the state,” said Montrae Waiters, AAA-The Auto Club Group spokeswoman. “If crude oil continues to decline, its possible gas prices will follow suit this week as more than 1.3 million Georgians prepare to hit the road for the 4th of July holiday weekend.” The AAA report says that crude prices dropped amid broad market concern regarding the potential for economic growth to slow or stall due to rising interest rates and inflation.
Since last Monday, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline has decreased by 9 cents to $4.89. AAA says that if gas demand continues its downward trend, it may contribute to pump prices decreasing this week.
Georgia has the second lowest gas prices in the nation, just behind South Carolina.
