Democrat vying for another go at Georgia Insurance Commissioner

Posted 2:36PM on Friday 17th June 2022 ( 1 year ago )

After finishing first last month, Janice Laws Robinson, who was the Democratic nominee for the job in 2018, is gearing up for a runoff next Tuesday.

“We deserve to have an elected Insurance Commissioner, not just someone that is handpicked, that has no background in insurance and no commitment to the people of Georgia as it relates to insurance,” Laws Robinson told WDUN’s Martha Zoller Show.

Incumbent Republican Insurance Commissioner John King was appointed to the job by Governor Brian Kemp after Jim Beck was indicted for fraud. King, who has a law enforcement background, is the first Hispanic to hold a statewide office in Georgia.

Laws Robinson says her first act will be to push for the repeal of laws that she believes give insurance companies the ability to raise premiums freely. To do this, she would need the legislature's backing, which is expected to remain in Republican hands.

In the May election, Laws Robinson finished more than 103,000 votes ahead of her runoff opponent Raphael Baker. Baker was recently a no-show for an Atlanta Press Club debate.
