Gwinnett Co. Police releases suspect's identity following officer-involved shooting

The Gwinnett County Police Department released the identity of the suspect who was shot Monday night in Lawrenceville in an officer-involved shooting.

Levi Bryan, 17, of Oakwood, is in critical condition after Gwinnett County officers returned fire.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Bryan entered a home on Pine Lane around 10:17 with a gun. He threatened the people inside, including his girlfriend.

He was forced to leave the home before officers arrived. When Gwinnett County Police responded to the aggravated battery call, they found Bryan in the woods behind Pine Lane homes.

Bryan fired his gun and struck a K-9 police dog. Officers returned fire and shot Bryan.

Kai, the K-9 police dog, is in stable condition. Charges against Bryan are pending. The GBI will also conduct an independent investigation on the use of force.

According to the GBI, there have been 52 officer-involved shootings in 2022.

The Gwinnett County Police Department said K-9 Kai was in stable condition after being shot multiple times by a suspect Monday evening.

Kai is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois narcotics and patrol K-9. Kai has been with the department for under a year.

A suspect and a K-9 police dog both suffered gunshot wounds after a shootout Monday night with Gwinnett County police.
 
According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, the incident began around 10:20 p.m. at a home on Pine Lane in Lawrenceville. A man at the home was threatening a female with a handgun. Before police could arrive, the man fled the house, still armed. 

Gwinnett Police K-9 officers and the Aviation Unit located the man in a wooded area near the house. The man fired at officers as they approached, and a bullet struck a K-9 dog. Officers returned fire, hitting the man. 

Officers treated the man at the scene and he was taken to a local hospital by ambulance. The K-9 was taken to a local animal hospital for treatment. There is no word on the current conditions of either the man or the dog.

Authorities did not release the name of the suspect. 

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate. It is standard protocol to call in the GBI anytime there’s an officer-involved shooting.

The suspect is in critical condition and is being treated at Northside Gwinnett Hospital.
